Shade Grown || Glossary of coffee terms || Certifications
Organic coffee basically means that the bean is allowed to mature without the aid of chemicals. The same goes for the processing and roasting of the beans. To be certified organic requires that these practices are observed and documented 3 years running. Our coffee is grown and processed without the addition of any artificial chemicals. Member plantations are inspected monthly to insure ongoing compliance. Beans from each farm are also inspected at picking and at processing, as required by the stringent certification process of Skal. This is the key that sets Tesoros Del Sol™ apart, and makes our coffee truly organic. World reports indicate that the use of chemicals in the cultivating of coffee is the rule, and that the non-use of chemicals is the exception. Use of chemicals is not only dangerous for the farmers and workers, but also for their families, neighbors, land, water, plants, animals, birds, and, finally, for you, the consumer. Shade-grown coffee provides a natural alternative to herbicide use, provides for rich compost, and supplies important habitat for migratory and native bird species. |

Recent changes legislated for coffee processing have allowed the rivers to begin to return to a healthier state, but conventional processing continues to use large amounts of water and produce tremendous waste. Tesoros Del Sol™ uses patio-drying techniques and the small amount of waste produced is entirely recycled for use in the growth process. |
